Artistic Director post – Sunday, January 2, 2011

Tomorrow (Monday, January 3, 2011) begins a 40 day countdown on The Making of Romeo & Juliet.  We invite you to log on daily for updates on what goes into the process of putting together a full scale production like Romeo & Juliet from start to finish.  The curtain will rise on opening night to reveal the magic of a seemingly perfect performance, but what goes into the process? What happens from A to Z?  Dancers, directors, technicians, costumers, fight coaches, and others will be posting daily on this blog, sharing personal insights from their unique perspectives.

I choreographed my first R&J in 1992, and this will be the 5th restaging.  Will it be the same?  Decidedly not, each time is completely different, and this will be no exception.  Yes, the steps of my choreography are already there, but it is like visiting an old and dear friend after a long separation.  It is an opportunity to reconnect, reexamine, redefine, and rediscover anew the rich characters that Shakespeare provides.  This is my perspective, but for the dancers, it will be entirely different.  Each dancer in a principal role is a clean slate and will be experiencing this passionate drama for the first time.  What will they bring to the process?  Carinne and I eagerly look forward to this voyage of discovery with our artists.
