It certainly has been an incredible first week of rehearsals! The energy in and around the ballet studios has been so amazing - as we have all started to learn our various roles, scenes, fights, solos and pas de deux's. This week has been especially challenging, yet fun, for myself as I began to delve into my role as Mercutio, the best friend of Romeo. My first few days have almost seemed surreal as I quickly ran from one rehearsal to the next, pieceing together the complicated dance and fight choreography.
I feel that one of the most challenging aspects of playing the role of Mercutio (aside from the aerobic dancing and overwhelming sword fighting) will be the characterization. In my opinion it is most important for me to remain true to the traditional character as established by Shakespeare's play - while also being respectful and understanding of the character traits that have been envisioned by my artistic director and the show's choreographer, Mr. Ron Cunnignham - while ALSO trying to find ways to stylize Mercutio with my own personal interpretation and flair. In this beginning stage of the work process I must make sure not to simply perform the choreographic steps and structure, which is primarily emphasized during rehearsals, but to also begin to develop who Mercutio is as a person and how he relates to all those around him. I sure do have my work cut out for me.
Although our rehearsal work day has been quite strenuous thus far (as I along with my fellow SacBallet dancers try to retain choreography and character notes and tend to our sore bodies) I have been spending part of my evenings re-reading the infamous Shakespearan play, taking choreographic notes, some helpful character notes and reviewing my new sword fighting skills whenever I get a chance. I guess you can say that this week we have all been eating, drinking, sleeping and breathing the music and the passion of Romeo & Juliet - while still finding time to relax with a nice ice packet on the ankles and knees with a good beer, a crossword puzzle and the company of friends. Cheers!
Always, Christopher
Taking a break with my good friend and fellow company dancer, Lauren Breen in between rehearsals. You can usually find me relaxing my body & brain with a tricky crossword puzzle during dancer downtime.
